What happens in KS2?

In Year 5 of Key Stage 2 (KS2), students continue their primary education and build upon the foundational knowledge acquired in previous years. The curriculum in Year 5 covers a range of subjects and aims to deepen students’ understanding and skills.

Here are some general aspects of what happens in Year 5 KS2:

English/Language Arts:

Reading: Students continue to develop their reading skills, focusing on comprehension, fluency, and a wider range of genres.

Writing: There is an emphasis on expanding writing skills, including grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. Narrative and descriptive writing may be introduced.

Number Sense: Building on previous years, students delve deeper into number sense, including place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Geometry and Measurement: Introduction to basic geometry concepts, measurement (length, weight, capacity), and understanding 2D and 3D shapes.

Students continue to strengthen their logical thinking and problem-solving skills through both verbal and non-verbal reasoning. They learn to identify patterns, make connections, and draw conclusions using clear, structured thought processes. Verbal reasoning activities focus on vocabulary, analogies, sequences, and understanding relationships between words, while non-verbal reasoning develops skills in spotting visual patterns, similarities, and spatial relationships. As they progress, students build confidence in applying these reasoning strategies to both familiar and unfamiliar problems.
